Painting the Portrait and Costumed Figure
Sherrie McGraw and David A Leffel will team up to teach how painting works in relationship to the human figure. You will learn how to make beautiful brushwork that will bring your portraits to life. If you’ve struggled with controlling oil paint, this class will help you break through the confining aspect of “drawing with paint” to what it means to “sculpt” with paint. Learning from two warm and engaging artists who have mastered both painting and teaching, they’ll revolutionize how you think about painting. david a.leffel upcoming workshops
In this unique workshop, Stacy will introduce students into the world of sketching on the streets. Her travels have taken her to the streets of the United States and Europe for years armed only with a sketchbook, drawing pen and travel watercolor kit to gather material as inspiration for studio paintings. Now she will give you all her secrets to traveling light and yet taking your art skills on the road.
In this class students will explore the streets of New York City to find inspiration for studio paintings. By using the direct nature of drawing, students will take a sensitive look at the character of this architecturally rich city. By studying its streets, squares, buildings and bridges, students will experience why New York City feels so alive.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, will be spent sketching on the streets*. Saturday will be spent in the studio (The Art Guild) where Stacy will create a composition from her sketches and photographs in the morning. In the afternoon, inspired by the morning’s demonstration, Stacy will guide students on how to use their reference material to start a beautiful painting of their own and finish on their own. Students are welcome to use oils, acrylics or watercolors for their “finished” pieces. (No pastels for this workshop.)
With Stacy’s warm and generous nature, everyone—regardless of experience—will feel comfortable tackling this exciting subject matter.
*There will be demonstrations and daily individual critiques; all levels are welcome
Students will be responsible for their transportation to and from pre-determined meeting places in NYC, Wednesday – Friday. Please consider the train or carpooling.
